Car insurance for learner and provisional drivers
One of the most common questions that learner drivers ask is "Can I get insurance?"
If you are a learner driver and wish to be taught by your parent, it is important to find out if your parent's car insurance policy will cover learner drivers. For example, with GIO Insurance, if you have Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance there is no need to list drivers while they are on a learner permit.
Some insurance companies offer a 'Named Driver Policy' that may cover your parents (if they are named on the insurance policy), but not you as a learner driver.
Insurance excess increase
If the learner driver isn't named on the policy, there may be an additional excess which is higher if the driver is aged under 25. Even if you are added to your to your parents insurance policy, they may end up paying a higher excess in the event of a claim.
Tips For learner drivers looking for insurance
- Shop around. Some insurance companies do not charge a higher excess for a learner driver driving with a parent (full license driver). In 2007, NRMA Insurance introduced a new change to waive the young driver age excess on its comprehensive car insurance policies for learner drivers if involved in a collision, providing they are accompanied by a fully licensed driver 25 years of age or over. RACQ includes a similar policy for younger drivers
- Make sure you get your own insurance policy, or be named on your parent's policy once you get your provisional license. This is essential because the unlisted driver excess may be payable in the event of any car accident claim you make.
- If you are learning to drive with a driving instructor, be sure to check whether your driving school has all of the following comprehensive insurance, public liability & indemnity insurance
